Students Showcase Innovation Ahead of National STEAM in Action Challenge

The Ministry of Education, Skills, Youth and Information (MoESYI) will host the STEAM in Action Challenge on Thursday, January 29, 2026, under the theme “Creating Solutions, Driving Change.” This exciting initiative encourages students to apply structured problem solving through methodologies such as the Design Thinking Process and the Engineering Design Process to tackle real world challenges.

The challenge focuses on six key areas:

  • Renewable Energy Solutions
  • Climate Solutions
  • Robotics and Automation
  • Health Innovations
  • Agriculture and Food Security
  • Environmental Advocacy through the Arts

Mini STEAM Competition

In preparation for the national event, a mini STEAM competition was hosted featuring students from First, Third, and Fourth Form. Each form worked within a specific focus area:

  • First Form: Environmental Advocacy through the Arts
  • Third Form: Health Innovations (Mental Wellness)
  • Fourth Form: Renewable Energy

Pre Judging Session Highlights

On Friday, January 23, 2026, students participated in a pre judging session where they pitched their projects. The session provided an opportunity to review student work, engage briefly with participants, and offer evaluative feedback aligned with STEAM principles. It also served as the basis for selecting the strongest projects to advance to the national competition.

Congratulations to the Winning Classes

  • First Form: 105
  • Third Form: 306
  • Fourth Form: 401

We applaud all participants for their creativity, effort, and commitment to developing solutions that matter.

Appreciation to Our Judging Panel

Sincere thanks are extended to our judging panel for their time, expertise, and valuable guidance:

  • Mr. Williams, Lecturer at The University of the West Indies and expert in Renewables and Electronics
  • Our Alpha teachers: Miss T. Douglas, Miss M. Wood, Mr. B. McConnell, Miss R. Sinclair, and Miss N. Beckford

Your support and feedback played an important role in strengthening student projects and improving presentation quality.

Special Thanks

Special thanks are extended to Ms. S. Jones, the STEAM Coordinator who planned, organized, and coordinated the entire event;  also to  Miss T. Douglas, the Form Teachers, Coordinators, and all staff members who worked closely with students to ensure project completion. We also wish to recognize Miss T. Johnson and Mrs. Parker Williams for their invaluable support in planning and preparing for the day. Your dedication and commitment are sincerely appreciated.

On May 1, 1884, Jesse Ripoll inaugurated Convent of Mercy Academy 'Alpha'.

Under the legacy of Catherine McAuley and the Sisters of Mercy, and within the global Mercy Education system, we have blossomed in Jamaica, with nine schools educating over 4,000 students.

130 years later, on May 1, 2024, we celebrated with the Blessing of our new Entranceway. The event was presided over by Apostolic Nuncio, His Excellency Santiago de Wit Guzmán, The Most Rev. Kenneth Richards, Archbishop of Kingston who blessed the Entranceway, The Most Rev.
